Lohri is a most popular winter festival celebrated in the Indian state of Punjab,Himachal Pradesh and some other parts of North India. It is usually observed on January 13th every year and marks the culmination of the winter season. But in 2024, it will be celebrated on 14th January . Because Makar Sakranti is on 15th January in 2024.And Lohri festival is celebrated a day before Makar Sakranti.
लोहड़ी भारत के राज्य पंजाब , हिमाचल प्रदेश और उत्तर भारत के कुछ अन्य हिस्सों में मनाया जाने वाला एक सबसे लोकप्रिय शीतकालीन त्योहार है। यह आमतौर पर हर साल 13 जनवरी को मनाया जाता है और सर्दियों के मौसम की समाप्ति का प्रतीक है। लेकिन 2024 में यह 14 जनवरी को मनाया जाएगा। क्योंकि 2024 में मकर सक्रांति 15 जनवरी को है और मकर सक्रांति से एक दिन पहले लोहड़ी का त्योहार मनाया जाता है.

Why do we celebrate the festival of Lohri?
क्यों मनाते हैं लोहड़ी का पर्व ?
There are many popular stories behind celebrating Lohri. The festival of Lohri is considered to be associated with Mother Sati, Lord Krishna and Dulla Bhatti. On this day there is a tradition of singing Dulla Bhatti song (which is very popular). Fire is lit in an open place on Lohri. Everyone worships this sacred fire. All the family members and relatives come together to burn Lohri. New crops, rewari, til, peanuts, jaggery etc. are thrown into the fire. At the same time, Lohri related items are gifted to the guests and they congratulate them on Lohri.
लोहड़ी मनाने के पीछे कई प्रचलित कथाएं हैं. लोहड़ी का पर्व माता सती, भगवान श्रीकृष्ण व दुल्ला भट्टी से जुड़ा हुआ माना गया है. इस दिन दुल्ला भट्टी वाला गीत गाने की परंपरा है(जो काफी प्रचलित है). लोहड़ी पर खुली जगह अग्नि जलाई जाती है. सभी लोग इस पवित्र अग्नि की पूजा करते हैं. घर परिवार व रिश्तेदार सब लोग मिलकर लोहड़ी जलाते हैं. अग्नि में नई फसल, रेवड़ी, तिल, मूंगफली, गुड़ आदि डाले जाते हैं. वहीं, मेहमानों को लोहड़ी से संबंधित वस्तुएं Gift की जाती हैं और लोहड़ी की बधाइयां देते हैं.

- Harvest Festival: Lohri is a harvest festival that signifies the end of the winter solstice and the arrival of longer days. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm by farmers and is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya.
फसल उत्सव: लोहड़ी एक फसल उत्सव है जो शीतकालीन संक्रांति के अंत और लंबे दिनों के आगमन का प्रतीक है। यह किसानों द्वारा बड़े उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है और सूर्य देव को समर्पित है। - Bonfire Ritual: The most prominent feature of Lohri celebrations is the lighting of bonfires. People gather around the bonfire and throw, til (sesame seeds), gur (jaggery), and mungfli (peanuts) into the fire, and perform traditional folk dances like Bhangra and Gidda around it. The bonfire symbolizes the energy and warmth.
अलाव की रस्म: लोहड़ी उत्सव की सबसे प्रमुख विशेषता अलाव जलाना है। लोग अलाव के चारों ओर इकट्ठा होते हैं, आग में तिल, गुड़ और मूंगफली डालते हैं, और उसके चारों ओर भांगड़ा और गिद्दा जैसे पारंपरिक लोक नृत्य करते हैं। अलाव ऊर्जा और गर्मी का प्रतीक है - Traditional Music /Dance: Lohri celebrations are accompanied by lively folk music and dance. People wear colorful traditional clothes and engage in energetic dance forms like Bhangra and Gidda. These performances are a way to express joy and celebrate the harvest.
पारंपरिक संगीत /नृत्य: लोहड़ी उत्सव लोक संगीत और नृत्य के साथ मनाया जाता है। लोग रंग-बिरंगे पारंपरिक कपड़े पहनते हैं और भांगड़ा और गिद्दा जैसे ऊर्जावान नृत्य रूपों में संलग्न होते हैं। ये प्रदर्शन खुशी व्यक्त करने और फसल का जश्न मनाने का एक तरीका है। - Pooja recitation: In the evening, after lighting the bonfire, people offer prayers for a good harvest and prosperity. They sing traditional songs, exchange greetings, and sharing offering(parsad) consisting of til, gur, and peanuts.

Traditional Punjabi/Himachali dishes, especially those made with jaggery and sesame seeds,like tillcholi etc. are prepared and shared among friends and family. Sarson ka Saag and Makki ki Roti are popular choices during Lohri.
